ADHD & The Myth of Consistency

Why Perseverance Wins Every Time

We hear it all the time: "Consistency is key!" But for those of us with ADHD, we know that consistency can feel like an elusive unicorn. We start strong, feeling motivated and ready to tackle the world, but then something new or shiny appears, and suddenly, our carefully laid plans vanish into thin air.

But here’s the good news: Perseverance beats consistency every single time.

Why ADHD and Consistency Don’t Mix

Having ADHD doesn’t mean we lack the ability to reach our goals. It just means our brains work differently. We thrive on novelty, get easily distracted, and often struggle to follow rigid, linear routines. And yet, society tells us that success is built on daily consistency. When we can’t stick to a perfect routine, we often feel like we’re failing—but that’s simply not true.

The belief that success requires strict consistency can trap us in an all-or-nothing mindset. If we can’t follow a plan flawlessly, we may feel inclined to abandon it entirely. This cycle of self-doubt and frustration undermines our progress and ignores the unique strengths of adult ADHD brains.

The Power of Perseverance

Instead of beating ourselves up over missed deadlines and broken habits, let’s focus on what we do best: bounce back.

  • Missed a workout? No problem! Get up and move tomorrow.
  • Forgot to take your meds? Acknowledge it and start fresh.
  • Procrastinated on an important project? Forgive yourself and break it into smaller, more manageable steps.

The key isn’t about showing up the same way every day. It’s about resilience: showing up again after a setback. It’s about continuing to move forward, even in an unpredictable, messy, ADHD-friendly way.

Here's a new mantra for your ADHD brain. Instead of saying, "I have to be consistent, let's reframe it: I'll keep going, no matter what."  This mindset shift removes the pressure of perfection and allows room for real progress.

Finding Success on Our Terms

For those of us with ADHD, success looks different. It’s not about sticking to a rigid schedule—it’s about adaptability. We can build systems that work with our brains, not against them. That means:

  • Embracing flexibility: Our routines don’t have to be the same every day. Understanding that routines can be adaptable allows for a more personalized approach to daily life.
  • Setting small, realistic goals: Bite-sized progress is still progress. Breaking larger tasks into smaller steps provides a sense of accomplishment and helps maintain motivation.
  • Using visual reminders and tools: Alarms, planners, timers, and visual cues can help keep track of tasks even when consistency falters.

Progress Over Perfection

The idea that consistency is the only path to success is a myth—especially for those of us with ADHD. Instead of viewing inconsistency as a failure, we can reframe it as an opportunity for growth. Success isn’t about following a rigid plan every day; it’s about perseverance, adaptability, and finding what works for you.

So, let’s stop chasing the myth of perfect consistency. Instead, let’s celebrate our resilience, our creativity, and our ability to keep moving forward—even when the path isn’t straight. ADHD isn’t a roadblock to success; it just means we take a different route to get there.

Keep going.
